Preserving Our Sacred Time: Giving Priority to What Matters Most!

Safeguarding Our Set-Apart Time: Making First Things First

Greetings, dear readers of CloserwithJesus.com!

Today, I want to share an inspiring object lesson that teaches us a profound truth about setting priorities in our lives. It’s a lesson we all need to heed, especially in our fast-paced world, where the busyness of daily life often threatens to swallow up our precious time with God.

Imagine a professor standing before her class with a large glass jar filled with fist-sized rocks. She asked her students if the jar was full, and they all responded with a unanimous “Yes.” But then, she brought out a pail of pea-sized gravel and shook it into the jar, filling the gaps around the larger rocks. Once again, she asked if the jar was full, and the students hesitated, realizing that there was still some space left.

Next, the professor poured sand into the jar, and it seeped into all the remaining crevices between the rocks and gravel. When she asked once more if the jar was full, the students responded with certainty that there was still room.

At this point, the professor revealed the true lesson she wanted to convey. She said, “Learn to put the big rocks in the jar first, and then fit everything else around them! You have to set your priorities in life consciously, otherwise the details of life—the sand and the gravel—will swallow up your time.”

This simple yet powerful object lesson resonates with us spiritually, physically, financially, and emotionally. We need to learn to prioritize and put the most important things in our lives—the “big rocks”—first, before they get crowded out by the daily demands of life.

In our pursuit of God and His kingdom, we often deceive ourselves into thinking that serving Him is the same as knowing Him intimately. But God calls us to be with Him and know Him before we go and serve Him. We cannot give to others what we have not received ourselves sitting at His feet.

Ellen White wisely warns us against neglecting prayer and study of God’s word. These are our weapons against the obstacles that hinder our progress towards heaven. Neglecting them makes it easier to neglect them further. So, let us resolve to make time with God our daily priority, even if it means sacrificing a bit of sleep or cutting out less important activities.

Now, you may wonder how to guard and protect your set-apart time with God. Here are some personal tips that can help:

1. Find your solitary place: Just like Jesus often sought solitary places to pray, find a special spot where you can have your daily devotions without distractions.

2. Develop healthy sleep habits: Go to bed at a reasonable hour to ensure you have the energy and focus to spend time with God in the morning.

3. Rise early: Embrace the habit of getting up early, as many godly individuals throughout history have done. Begin your day with God before anything else.

4. Avoid distractions: When you wake up, resist the temptation to check emails, social media, or answer texts. Give your undivided attention to God.

5. Make a plan and be consistent: Have a tentative plan for your devotional time, combining prayer and Bible study. Let the Holy Spirit guide your study and apply God’s Word to your life.

6. Show reverence and respect: Approach your time with God with holy awe, realizing that you are in the presence of the King of the universe.

Remember, setting apart time for God is a divine appointment that should never be taken lightly. Let us be intentional in cultivating a close relationship with Him and guarding this precious time.

As we prioritize seeking God’s kingdom first, we will find that everything else falls into place. Our lives will be filled with supernatural strength, wisdom, and peace. God always rewards those who seek Him diligently. So, let’s dare to put God first each day and experience the transformation He brings to our lives!

May God bless you abundantly as you safeguard your set-apart time with Him.

With love and encouragement,

Closer with Jesus
